Sofa Compliance Checklist for Importers

Compliance is the least glamorous part of furniture importing — and the most expensive to get wrong. A container that clears customs only to fail a market's flammability or chemical requirement becomes a very expensive lesson in storage fees, rework and lost retail windows. This checklist maps the four areas we discuss with every importer, and the certifications we can document on our side of the transaction.

Foam and filling. Flexible polyurethane foam is regulated for emissions and, in some markets, flammability. The most widely recognized independent standards for foam safety are CertiPUR-US (focused on the US market) and the chemical restrictions covered by Europe's REACH framework. Importers should ask their factory for the foam standard their product is built to — at DIAS, all foam complies with CertiPUR-US and RoHS safety and environmental standards, verified before materials enter production under our "test-before-use" policy.

Fabrics and textiles. Fabrics, yarns and trims are screened for harmful substances under OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the global textile safety certification — relevant across the EU, US and AU. If your product uses upholstery textiles, ask for the OEKO-TEX status of the materials in your spec. All DIAS fabrics, yarns and zippers are certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and core zipper components are sourced directly from YKK's original factory under a long-term supply agreement.

Children's furniture adds another layer. Kids' products (beds, play couches, sofas) face stricter scrutiny in most markets, covering small parts, stability, edge safety and chemical limits. If your program includes children's foam furniture — a core part of our lineup — compliance should be discussed at the design stage, not after the first container sells. Our team can assist with the specific certification requirements of your market, and we build kids' products from the same tested materials as our adult line.

Documentation and traceability. Beyond product standards, customs clearance itself requires a clean document package: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin, plus any test reports your market demands. We provide the full package with every shipment, under EXW, FOB Shenzhen, CIF/CFR or DDP/DDU terms, and we regularly export to the United States, Canada, the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, South Korea, Argentina and the Middle East.

A practical workflow for importers. First, confirm your market's current requirements with an importer of record or compliance advisor — rules vary by country and product category. Second, put the required standards into your factory specification in writing before sampling. Third, request supporting documents (certificates, test reports) with the quotation, not after production. A factory that documents compliance as standard practice — rather than as a special request — is usually the one that can actually deliver it.
